The Alpha King: Release Day!

The Alpha King
Available NOW!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

A re-release with over 22,500 words added to the original novel. A number of new scenes: more of Tal's backstory, more of Talon and Blaze together, more of Buck and Percy, more of Talon in his role as Alpha "Bitch" of Tumaro, just a whole lot more.

3 Things That Didn't Make it Into The Alpha King

A scene where Talon and Blaze come upon a bearcow and Blaze shifts and hunts it down to present it to Talon as a gift, but Talon is distraught by the kill and tries to bring the animal back to life. It really showed the difference between the way these two characters viewed the world.

A scene at the end of the book with Blaze and Talon playing with their children. I just felt as if the book was already over and that was extraneous information that could be saved for the next book.

The actual distance between the planets was kept out of the book. I did extensive world building, even going so far as to create a star map, so I can tell people exactly how many light years Tumaro is from Strawxigian. But I realized that not everyone is as big a nerd as I am and I didn't want to put the readers to sleep so I kept out that information (Answer: 5 light years)

One family is fated to bring about this amazing destiny. One man puts it all in motion, the day he crashes onto the wolf-planet of Tumaro and meets his mate.

Talon Versuthion always knew that some kind of way, life was going to screw him over. His parents died when he was just a boy and he can't remember a thing about them. The Alpha King: Excerpt

The Alpha King
November 30th

Talon felt his brain pause momentarily at the endearment, but then the other man’s words sank in. “What?! No-No-No! No, you have to be wrong! She was sitting in the seat next to mine. She was there! You have to go find her! You have to go and find my sister! Josie! Josie!” Talon was frantic. He sat up swiftly, swaying a bit and pushing away the mysterious man who seemed determined to try to make him lay back down in the bed. “Let me go! I have to go and find my sister! Josie!” He screamed. He tried to race for the door, stumbling along the way, which swung open in front of him, causing him to barrel into a very wide, very firm chest.

“Whoa, there. Where are you running off to?”
The chest spoke, and Talon felt his entire body flush. He wanted to wrap his arms around the body before him, wanted to wrap his legs around the bigger man’s waist and never let go. Talon lifted his gaze up past the thick, muscled, and tanned neck to the square jaw, dusted faintly with a dark, five o’clock shadow, to the aquiline nose that spoke of an aristocratic heritage, to a pair of the most gorgeous dark blue eyes that Talon had ever seen. They were almost startling in their intensity. Add to that the long black hair that hung to just below broad shoulders and an awe-inspiring, overly large frame. The stranger was a walking wet dream come true. Talon quickly reconsidered when the man growled low and clutched him fiercely before burying his face in Talon’s neck. Talon squeaked in surprise but did not pull away. He felt safe in this man’s arms, even though he didn’t know his name. He never wanted to let go.

Talon felt the world spin when the man in question quickly jerked Talon behind him and growled “Mine” at the other man in the room. His voice was low, forceful, growly, and full of authority and power. Talon knew this man was not one to be messed with. He was the law in that room at that moment. Talon was happy the man seemed to be on his side, even if he wasn’t exactly sure why.

“Blazell? Are you saying that this… humanoid… is your mate?” the first man asked incredulously.
The man named Blazell turned to look at Talon, his eyes softening rapidly and a slow smile coming to his face. He inhaled deeply, breathing in Talon’s scent, his eyes closing before he turned back to answer the question. “Yes, Buck, he’s mine… my mate.”

99c Sale! Revenge The Cowboy Way

Revenge, The Cowboy Way by Penny Estelle

Good morning! I’m very excited to be on Rooster and Pig Publishing’s blog today as I have some really great news! Here it comes – DUM DA DUM DUM – For three days, October 17, 18, and 19, Revenge, The Cowboy Way will go from $4.99 to 99 CENTS! That’s right! It’s true! 99 CENTS! THREE DAYS ONLY!!!

Let me take a few minutes to tell you about my story, Revenge, The Cowboy Way. A hundred years ago, I had my first child. Well, since I was up 24/7 I figured I would read (something I never did) and got the book Sweet Savage Love, by Rosemary Rogers. The story of Ginny Brandon and Steve Morgan. YIKES! This was a steamy story and to this day, one of my favorites.

As I read it, I thought, “Heck, I can do this!” So, five years later I finished a 300 page story on my Electric Brothers typewriter and was sure I had written the next great American novel. HMMMMM – I sent off two queries and got two, “Thanks, but no, thanks” replies. I put my story in a box and it lived in my closet for forty years.

After getting several books published, I thought I would take it out and have a look at it. Oh my goodness. What pathetic writing. I had to rewrite the whole story! I sent the first four chapters to Rooster and Pig Publishing and they sent me a contract. I was absolutely thrilled! My other published stories were shorts or novellas. This was my first novel!

I guess in today’s world you can’t write stories anymore of bodice rippers and men having their way with women whenever they want. Well, my story had some of those things in it. MY POOR EDITOR – She kept saying, “I think you should change this,” and, “Really, this needs to be softer.” Well of course, she was right and her suggestions and input made the story so much better.

Read an excerpt below and don't forget to pick up the book for just 99c!

Blurb

When Brian Thornton is taken by surprise at gunpoint, while in the bed of a beautiful, wealthy woman, he swears his revenge. But when he learns his humiliation was at the hands of a young woman and a boy, his vengeance knows no bounds.

Joanna Simmons finds herself snatched out of her home and taken to Thornton's ship. Against her will, she travels to Texas, and then by wagon train to Bastrop, Brian's home town. Joanna finds acceptance and genuine friendship with the people of the town, down to Brian's sister, but the emotional war that wages between Brian and Joanna, keeps any kind of happiness at bay.

Revenge, the Cowboy Way, is the story of hate, love and revenge. The question is: Whose revenge is it?

Excerpt

Joanna busied herself by cleaning a big black kettle in the corner. She hung it by the handle and swung it over the fire. Then began the arduous task of filling it, one rain-filled bucket at a time. It was getting later in the day, and the rain still hadn’t let up at all.

She was feeding the fire when Brian finally returned.

She jumped up and ran to help him take off his slicker. His hands were like ice and his lips were blue. His teeth were chattering so hard, he couldn’t talk. “Get over here by the fire. We need to get these clothes off right now before you freeze to death!” Her energy was zapped just undressing him. She wrapped blankets around him and laid him by the fire. He was asleep instantly.

He had brought in two burlap bags. Inside one were two rabbits and inside the other were vegetables and coffee. How did he come by these? Remembering when Brian had shown her how to clean a rabbit, she set to work doing just that. She cut the meat into chunks, dropping them into the water, and then cut up the vegetables. It would take a long time for the rabbit to be eatable, but at least Pappy would have some broth when he woke next. She also found some tin cups and made herself a cup of coffee.

Joanna sat up long into the night, drinking coffee, leaning against the wall by the fireplace. She watched Brian sleep. She finally admitted it. She loved this man. She also knew he would never return her love. Should she leave? Should she stay with Pappy for as long as he would have her? At least she would be able to see Brian. Could she live that way, seeing him with other women—maybe marrying someone else? No, she couldn’t.
And what about Pappy? Since her grandfather had died, this was the one man she could trust completely, and she had come to love this gentle old soul. It was like a stab in her heart to see the two men she loved, lying on the floor, so still and vulnerable. How infinitely sad she felt! Everything in the world she wanted was right here, in this broken down shack, yet nothing was in reach.
“Joanna...”

She never hesitated, just went to Brian, hungry for his embrace, weeping quietly against his shoulder.

"Once I started this book I could not put it down. This is the kind of story I love of self discovery as they grow in their relationship. I did shed some tears and worried that their love may not conquer all." 5 Stars

"What a ride! Up, down - back and forth. Hell, I didn't even get the name of the bull I was riding. Scaring, exhilarating - hoping you stay one to finish and then sailing through the air, praying you land on your feet. Highly recommended." 4 Stars

"Valentina Heart has written a book that is filled with both joy and heartache, with new discoveries and old fears and love so great that nothing could break it. I have to recommend that everyone read this book, but especially those who love two young men falling in love, dealing with traumatic events, supporting each other and being there for each other no matter what and two characters that are incredible strong in spirit and love." 5 Stars

"Beautifully written, heartbreaking and yet full of hope. I wanted to protect Danny so badly and was happy when Mike showed up for him. I'd really like a follow up to see how they are doing after everything that happened." 5 Stars

On Tap: Blue's Best

Scott Owen: I inherited Miranda’s cottage in Polperro from my grandmother. I spent a lot of time there after my mother died. Polperro lies on the south east coast of Cornwall. It's known for its idyllic location and fisherman’s cottages tightly built on the side of a hill overlooking the harbour.

Luger and I have some great friends and neighbors in Polperro, namely Cath and Tony. Our local pub, The Blue Peter Inn is right on the Harbour. Luger knows his way there, and has usually eaten his dinner before I can order my first pint.

No Good Deed: Recipe

In need of a warm cozy meal? Scott's got you covered. After spending the day together at Penarth Pier, Scott asks Connor to join him for pasta dinner. Connor informs Scott most of his meals comes frozen or in a can and are heated in the microwave. Connor takes a rain check.

This is the first dish Scott teaches Connor to cook.

“Come on, let’s get something to eat. I don’t know about you, but I’m starving.” Scott steered Connor towards the walk-in larder.
“What do you fancy?”
“I’m not sure what Mrs. Porter prepared, but I heard you cook a mean pasta. I’m curious to see if the rumours are true.”
Scott laughed. “Who told you I cook?” He picked out spaghetti, flour, fresh leeks, salt, pepper; and from the double fridge: milk, cheese and bacon.
“I heard straight from the horse’s mouth. You told me at the beach when we took the dogs out.”

No Good Deed: Excerpt

Keep your eyes open for No Good Deed, coming your way on the 22nd. In the meantime, feast on this little teaser.

--//--

Scott inched closer, a hand on either side of the mirror to steady himself. He glanced at Esme. “Is this real?”

“This is Connor as we speak.” Esme’s gaze stayed on Scott.

The mirror showed him a man-- no, not a man-- Connor, on a small sandy beach. Scott saw him walk to the water edge. The sea foam rolled up and covered Connor's bare toes and soaked into the bottom of his jeans. Connor lifted his head and raised his arms as the sun rose on the horizon. Scott collided with Esme as he stepped back. From Connor's back a huge pair of wings unfolded. Connor stretched each wing then folded them neatly against his naked back. Scott gasped in awe. That explained the scars on his back.

He'd known Connor was different, but witnessing with his own eyes was somewhat of a shock. ”Connor.”

Connor glanced about as if he heard his name then turned back to watch the sunrise.

In storybooks, Faeries were always depicted as tiny butterfly winged creatures, but here was Connor with a magnificent set of what looked like Golden eagle wings. Folded against his back they reached from the top of his head to his ankles. A gust of wind ruffled and lifted the longer feathers.

Esme stopped him when he reached out his hand to touch. “My son is glorious, is he not?” Esme searched Scott’s face. “You are not repulsed by his true form?”

“Yes, he is. That,” a note of wonder lit his voice as he pointed to the workbench, “doesn’t do him justice.” Scott couldn’t take his eyes off Connor as he walked the length of the small beach then retraced his sandy footprints. Tears welled, as he drank in Connor’s true form. What he wouldn’t give for a second chance to do right by Connor. Longing, regret, and guilt; he felt them all keenly.

The Editor: Common Mistakes and Where To Find Them

By Katherine Johnson

Editor-in-Chief, Rooster & Pig Publishing

As an editor, I’ve noticed many common mistakes in manuscripts. Most of them are easily fixed with a close review. Spell check is great, but a majority of the mistakes aren’t going to be flagged by spell check because, in essence, they are spelled correctly. Below are some of the more prevalent errors.

1) Then/Than

Then refers to a measure of time. Something happened. Something else happened after it. Example: Rick got in the car. Then he buckled his seat belt.
He got in first. Then he buckled up after getting inside.

Than refers to a comparison. Something is compared to something else, usually in a matter of preference.
Example: I’d rather read a book than watch television.
I’m comparing my desire for reading over the desire to watch TV.

2) Punctuation outside of dialogue quotations

Most publishers use the Chicago Manual of Style (not all, but most). When writing dialogue, there will always be some sort of punctuation within the quotes. Sometimes this is a comma, and other times, it’s a question mark or period. (Or, in very rare cases, an exclamation point, but try to avoid them. Use action words to convey surprise, shock, and other similar emotions.)

Example: Rick said, “I’m going to the store.”
Example: “I’m going to the store,” Rick said.

3) Commas and proper names

When a name is used, sometimes a comma is needed. Always use a comma when the addressing a person by name. However, using the name but not directly addressing the person doesn’t require a comma.

Example: “Liz, come here.”
Example: “I told Liz to come here.”
Example: “Come over, Liz,” Rick said.
Example: “I told Liz to come over,” Rick said.

4) Pronouns

I write same-gender romance, so I completely understand the craziness in dealing with pronouns—especially when writing in third person pov (point-of-view). That said, it’s generally a good habit to stick to one referenced person when using pronouns of the same gender. If you have two men in a 3rd pov story and both men are referenced by pronouns in the same paragraph, it can become very confusing to determine who is who. Rule of thumb: one pronoun-referenced person PER paragraph. All other people of the same gender should be first names.

Final Call: 3 Anthology Calls Close TODAY

Rooster and Pig has a regular rotation of Calls For Submission and today, three of those calls are closing! It's not too late to submit your short fiction, though. Here are the details.

Kritter Tales
Contemporary M/M

While some couples are happy with the pitter-patter of little feet in their home, other families just don't feel complete unless those feet belong to their four-legged baby instead of or in addition to, their two legged one. The decision to bring home a new pet is a big one, and sometimes it's a decision made impulsively. Is adoption their chosen path? Does your lonely character find an abandoned animal and bring it home to battle off the loneliness which leads him to the hot veterinarian? Or maybe an established couple has a little misunderstanding and one comes home to find a new addition to the family?

R&P wants your stories of men and their animals. What type of animal is completely up to you. Because sometimes a cat can be a man's best friend too. However, no paranormal twists, if you please, we want our men to be all human and our animals to be all animals, other than that, have fun with it! But let us know all about how these animals come to be the owners of their humans and how they help to either bring love into their human's life or how their presence helps to rekindle the flame.

Some couples are happy with the pitter-patter of little feet in their home; other families just don't feel complete without a four-legged baby. Or maybe an established couple has a little misunderstanding and one comes home to find a new addiction to the family? But what if the new pet isn't what it seems? What happens when your character(s) new pet turns out to be a shifter in disguise?

R&P wants your stories of men and their animals. What type of animal is completely up to you. We want your stories of men and their pets turned paranormal entities. Victimized
Contemporary M/M
All Proceeds To Charity

It starts with an insult. The smallest of ridicules take root planting the seed of self doubt and shame. Days turn into weeks but the emotional blows keep coming. Self doubt digresses to shame. Soon the physical blows solidify one's self contempt. Eventually, shame mutates into a morbid thing called self destruction. What defines a person is their ability to overcome. Abuse is often overlooked but most often missed in the gay community.

Rooster and Pig wants your stories of men overcoming their abusers. Subgenres are welcome but please no paranormal, science fiction or futuristic genres. We want stories as close to reality as possible. We are also aware that abuse often (and in most cases does) leads to rape but please only include rape in your story if it furthers the plot. These are not erotic dubious consent stories of seduction. These stores are about awareness. This anthology is more than just writing a story, this is an outlet for a potentially abused reader to find the strength they need to seek help.

All proceeds, minus the fees taken by our merchant account and PayPal will be donated to a domestic violence shelter that helps not only women and children in domestic violence situations but men as well. Neither Rooster & Pig nor any of the participating authors of this anthology will retain any money made. Authors should be aware and acknowledge this when submitting their stories to Rooster & Pig Publishing. R&P is asking for two years exclusive anthology publishing rights to all accepted stories to the anthology.

Blog Tour: Hop Against Homophobia and Transphobia

HAHaT
May 17th is the International day against Homophobia and Transphobia. Like the Day of Tolerance (Nov 16th), we seek to educate the curious and inspire everyone to better communication within their communities.

Welcome to Rooster and Pig Publishing. We're a publisher trying to show the world what the word inclusive really means. Not only do we gladly accept your M/M, F/F, and menage stories, but we're also actively seeking poly families, older couples, asexual, and grey-sexual relationships. In a world where same sex, polyamorous, and diverse relationships are still discriminated against and oppressed, we seek to inspire change through the written word by publishing books that show that these types of relationships are okay and beautiful.

We want to publish your science fiction epic where the main character just happens to be trans but the plot is really about lasers and gunships (pewpew!)

We believe writing a story about a gender fluid character shouldn't be an act of courage, it should be so normal that it is unremarkable.

So give us your unremarkable underdogs, your every-day demi-sexual divas, your casual cross-dressing caterers. Give us a good story and we'll show it to the world.

And if you just can't wait to get your hands on some of our awesome stories (really, we can't blame you), enter the rafflecopter raffle below for a change to pick TWO ebooks from our catalog in any format we offer.

Dyslexic? Let us know. We'll work with you to get a copy of the book in a dyslexic friendly font. Because that's how we do.
